RENO, Nev. (AP) — A 29-year-old Utah man has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for the armed carjacking of an elderly woman in a casino parking garage in northern Nevada.

Andrew Brigman of Layton pleaded guilty earlier to use of a firearm during a crime of violence in Sparks in July 2017.

U.S. District Judge Miranda Du in Reno also sentenced him Monday to five years' probation upon his release from prison.

Federal prosecutors say Brigman previously was convicted of felonies in Utah for attempted theft and aggravated assault. They say he had a child with him when he pointed a semi-automatic handgun at the woman in Sparks and demanded her car, phone and credit cards.

He was stopped in the stolen vehicle with a woman and four children for a traffic violation a few days later in Alamosa County, Colorado.
