LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Board of Regents says the acting president of the University of Nevada Las Vegas can apply for the job permanently after waiving a rule that would have prevented her from getting the job.

The regents' announcement Friday came as it also officially launched the start of its national search for a UNLV president.

They say they are allowing acting President Marta Meana to apply for the job after board of regents Chair Kevin Page and others heard from university faculty, staff, students and alumni who said they wanted both a national search and for her to be given the opportunity to be considered.

Page pledged an "open and transparent process."
