LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — Scott and Carol Patton lost everything they owned to fire in the middle of July.

The couple, both senior citizens, were caring for both two of their young grandchildren and said they woke in the early morning hours with the home already burning to the ground.

"I sat up to see the flames of the dragon come across my ceiling," Carol Patton said. "It was so surreal."

Scott Patton said a recent back injury made it difficult to escape from the bedroom, and his grandson Kaleb rushed back into the home to save him.

He sent Kaleb back out and managed to make it out of the home moments before it was engulfed.

They escaped with their lives, but little else.

They lost countless memories, a family pet, and the only roof they had to flames, leaving them living out of a powerless camper and relying on friends for the basics like showers.

Angel Chastain couldn't watch good people suffer, so she nominated them for the 13 Days and Knights of giving.

"Even through all of that, Carol has been so kind and offered to help us with things," Chastain said.

The Vegas Golden Knights Foundation awarded them a few months of housing in an extended stay hotel so the family can rest, get back on their feet, and stay under the same roof during the holidays.

Kaleb summed up how Chastain's nomination has impacted his family.

"I guess this means we're all family," he said.

Carol said the experience has been very hard on everyone, but proved there was never a point they couldn't overcome with faith and family.

"Never quit, believe in God, believe in family, and we have a fantastic community here," she said.

13 Days and Knights of Giving is sponsored by Golden Knights Foundation, Subaru of Las Vegas and America First Credit Union.
