Venetian, Palazzo recognized for energy saving techniques

Las Vegas (KTNV) - Some Las Vegas strip casinos are getting noticed by Washington.  The U.S. Department of Energy is calling The Venetian, and other Sands properties, leaders in saving energy and water.

"There's a moral and social obligation that we have," says Venetian CEO, George Markantonis.

"It's exciting to see energy and water reductions happening at a facility this size," says Maria Vargas with the U.S. Department of Energy.

The Sands Corporation includes The Venetian, The Palazzo, and the Sands Expo.  Since 2011, they have reduced their energy usage by 22%.

Their light bulbs are LED, their TVs are energy efficient, and now they're filtering their water with glass, saving gallons and gallons of wasted water.

It does save them money but officials say it's more than that.

"Saving energy and water is the right thing to do," says Vargas.
