LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) will begin the final paving and striping of Project Neon – a nearly $1 billion 4-mile-long widening of Interstate 15 from the U.S. 95 interchange to Sahara Avenue, which broke ground in 2016. The “Pave-A-Palooza” marathon starts this weekend with the following closures:

May 31-June 3 (Friday Night-Monday Morning)

  • U.S. Highway 95 will be reduced to one lane in each direction between Decatur and Casino Center boulevards from 10 p.m., May 31, until 5 a.m., June 3.
  • The Interstate 15 southbound to U.S. Highway 95 northbound ramp will be closed from 10 p.m., May 31, until 5 a.m., June 3.
  • The Rancho Drive onramp to U.S. Highway 95 southbound will be closed from 10 p.m., May 31, until 5 a.m., June 3.

May 31-June 1 (Friday Night-Saturday Night)

  • The Interstate 15 to U.S. Highway 95 High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) flyover will be closed from 10 p.m., May 31, until approximately 8 p.m., June 1.

June 1-June 3 (Saturday Night-Monday Morning)

  • The U.S. Highway 95 southbound to Interstate 15 northbound ramp will be closed from approximately 8 p.m., June 1, until 5 a.m., June 3.
  • The U.S. Highway 95 northbound offramp to Rancho Drive will be closed from approximately 8 p.m., June 1, until 5 a.m., June 3.
  • The Valley View Boulevard onramp to U.S. Highway 95 northbound will be closed from approximately 8 p.m., June 1, until 5 a.m., June 3.
  • The U.S. Highway 95 southbound offramp to Rancho Drive will be closed from approximately 8 p.m., June 1, until 5 a.m., June 3.

Crews are applying a special crumb rubber asphalt mix, incorporating shredded tires for a smoother, quieter ride. Crumb rubber lasts twice as long as traditional asphalt pavement while also creating a better friction surface with less wet weather splashing. And it also recycles used tires that otherwise would end-up in a landfill.

Kiewit Infrastructure West Co. is the design-build general contractor, with Atkins North America as lead designer. Project Neon is 96 percent finished and scheduled for substantial completion by mid-July.
