Public Education Foundation announces Education Hero Award Gala recipients

The Public Education Foundation’s 24th Annual Education Hero Award Gala will honor 10 community heroes who stepped up on behalf of students and families during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The virtual event will be broadcast on Vegas PBS and online on Sept. 11 from 7 -8:30 p.m.

Here are the list of recipients:

Community Heroes

Three Square Food Bank: A local nonprofit that pivoted from traditional distribution methods to open 43 emergency food distribution sites, and spent up to $400,000 a week to ensure children and families had food on their tables.

City of Henderson: A city government that quickly provided emergency child care for essential workers and purchased computers for kids in need.

Leaders in Training and Erica Mosca, Founder: An educator and community leader who created a nonprofit to cultivate community leaders among first-generation college students and fight against systemic inequality.

Business Heroes

Station Casinos: A family-owned company that made several of its well-known properties community hubs for organizations distributing basic necessities for their customers and community members.

NV Energy: A major corporation that set an example for helping families financially impacted by the crisis, and adjusted its philanthropic priorities to provide help where it was most needed.

Liberty Lock & Security: A small family-owned business that supported a project so they could retain their employees and provide school supplies and books to students most in need.

Education Heroes

Matt Mayhood: An educator who volunteered over 125 hours of his time to create online graduation ceremonies so that students and their loved ones could safely celebrate.

Dr. Greta Peay: An educator with almost 40 years of experience working in social justice who donated her time and energy to help teachers and administrators understand how to serve student needs during the pandemic.

Michelee Quiroz Cruz-Crawford: An educator dedicated to building trust and relationships with students and families, ensuring their needs are met both inside and outside of the classroom.

Ready to Learn Initiative / Vegas PBS: A public broadcasting service with over 50 years of experience in bringing high-quality educational content to living rooms throughout the state.
