Joseph Rosa celebrated his 100th birthday on Dec. 9.

Rosa is a member of 24 Hour Fitness USA in Summerlin and loves to go to the gym.

According to 24 Hour Fitness, Rosa came to them on Sept. 9, 2011, after he was the victim of a hit-and-run. At the time, he was in a wheelchair and his doctors had told him that he would never walk again.

He began training at the gym and in December of that year, he took his first steps without the help of a walker.

Since then, he has become an inspiration to the other members and the staff at the gym on Village Center Circle.

Rosa is a veteran of World War II and was a chief in the U.S. Navy/United States Coast Guard. His original ship was the USS Serpens, which exploded on Jan. 29, 1945, killing more than 250 on board. Rosa had been transferred off of the ship just three months before the explosion.

Rosa was helped in his recovery by gym staff members Will Campbell and Aaron Clay.
