Evil queen ends 'Joker's' reign at box office

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — "Maleficent: Mistress of Evil" took the box office crown this week knocking the clown prince of crime, "Joker," down to the #2 spot.

"Maleficent" grossed $35 million in North America and $117 worldwide in its first weekend at theaters, down from the opening of the first film in 2014 that grossed nearly $70 million its first weekend.

"Joker" dropped to second after occupying the top spot for the past two weeks with a respectable $29.2 million in North America and almost $78 million internationally.

The sequel "Zombieland: Double Tap" came in third place domestically with $29.2 million.
