A surfer is recovering in the Hawaii hospital after he lost his leg in a shark attack.

It happened just after 10 a.m. Friday near a popular surf spot called Leftovers near Haleiwa on the island of Oahu. Family and friends says the surfer, identified as 25-year-old Colin Cook, was sitting on his board when the shark attacked from underneath. The surfer punched it a couple of time before the shark swam off.

People on the beach used a surfboard leash to put a tourniquet on his thigh. Emergency service personnel say the group's quick actions ultimately helped save the surfer's life.

Lifeguards patrolled the waters to warn people about the attack and signs were posted from Laniakea Beach to Waimea Bay.

This was the fifth reported shark attack in Hawaii this year, according to CNN.
