LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — Since Memorial Day weekend, COVID-19 cases in Nevada have been on a steady climb. And many are worried about where the state could be in two weeks with another busy holiday weekend ahead.

"I firmly believe the most patriotic thing we can do to celebrate this Fourth of July is to wear our face coverings," said Nevada Sen. Yvanna Cancela, who serves on the state's COVID-19 task force.

Cancela joined a chorus of leaders, including Gov. Steve Sisolak, who pleaded with Nevadans to prioritize the health and safety of themselves and others over the holiday weekend.

"Please, please, I beg of you - don't get into large groups. Do not get into an area where you can't be socially distanced," said Sisolak, in a recorded video released Thursday evening.

"Now is the time to be cautious and thoughtful about how you decide to spend your time outside of your home if you leave your home," said Cancela.

The urgent pleas come as the state recorded its second-highest number of daily cases since the pandemic began - 985.

The record was set just last week.

Since Memorial Day weekend, hospitalizations have also been on a steady climb, now nearing the numbers Nevada saw at its peak in mid-April.

And with another holiday weekend, Cancela said this is the time to act responsibly - for yourself, your community, and the economy.

"Moving backward is not an option," she said. "And it's where we will end up if folks don't do their part."

Health experts agree the best way in slowing the spread of the virus is to practice social distancing, wear a face mask, and wash your hands as often as possible.
