A proposal heading to the governor's desk could soon mean an increase in the cost of hotel rooms in Las Vegas.

The Southern Nevada Tourism Infrastructure Committee approved a plan on Monday, to raise the hotel tax to generate money for a 600,000 square foot expansion of the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Area hotel rooms are already taxed at 12-percent tax to support tourism and education.
