Sign found on Michigan island being called sexist and racist

People living on Harsens Island say they are offended by a sign each of them saw while entering the island over the weekend.

Most of them were arriving by ferry when they got the surprise of reading a message that said "Don't die a virgin terrorist are waiting for you up there."

Detroit-based WXYZ reported the digital sign is owned by the same man operating the ferry on and off the island. It's unclear what his motivation was, but the founder of the Arab American civil rights league says make no mistake, this is an attack on the Islamic faith.

"It's unfortunate that someone is using a message to condone hate" says Nabih Ayad.

The sign has been changed to read something different. People on the island tell us they hope it's the last of the tasteless comments, especially considering all the children who also passed by each day. The owner of the sign declined to comment in response to our story.
