Firefighters say a valley woman's morning routine likely saved her home from going up in flames Friday evening.

"Oh my god," said Marlene Hernandez.

The fire erupted at a vacant house near Tropicana and Boulder Highway.  Soon, the flames jumped over to Hernandez's home.

"I close all the doors when I go to work," she said.

Hernandez says she does this to ensure her cat doesn't run all over the house.

Firefighters tell 13 Action News the closed door also acted as a barrier to heat and smoke.  The fire caused damage to one room, but it did not spread further.  Crews were able to contain the flames in time.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but it's believed to have been sparked by the homeless breaking into a vacant property next door.
