Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department names new female captain

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's newest captain is beating the odds and coming back to her roots.

Captain Yasenia Yatomi is one of only three female captains for LVMPD's 10 area commands. She's in charge of an area northeast of West Charleston Boulevard and South Rainbow Boulevard.

Just being a woman on the force puts her in the minority, but she doesn't see this as a challenge at all.

"I believe everybody sitting in my seat today would have the same challenges that I have," said Yatomi.

She's worked in so many departments: The canine unit, robbery detail, internal affairs, and now she's reached this milestone.

"I wanted to gain as much experience as I could in every section that I ever worked so I would become better at what it was I signed on the dotted line to do 18 years ago," said Yatomi.

This is kind of like a homecoming for Captain Yatomi. She went to elementary and middle school in the area she's now in charge of policing.

"What I'm really most proud of is the fact that I belong to this agency. I think this agency is amazing," said Yatomi.
