SPARKS (AP) — Interstate 80 on the eastern outskirts of Sparks in northern Nevada reopened after being closed for several hours Saturday due to multiple crashes that authorities said were caused by icy conditions and excessive speed.

The Nevada Highway Patrol said the crashes involved a total of 17 vehicles and that three people were transported to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

At least eight tow trucks were summoned to remove vehicles involved in the crashes.

A Highway Patrol spokeswoman, Trooper Hannah DeGoey, said the highway was especially slick due to overnight snow.
