PAHRUMP (KTNV) — An investigation is underway after a human skull was found in a desert area of Nye County over the weekend.

Officials with the Nye County Sheriff's Office confirmed hikers found the skull near Barney Street and Nye Road on May 25.

Deputies and detectives responded and hikers led them to the location, where the remains were confirmed to be human, authorities stated.

"At this time, investigators cannot speculate on how long the skull had been at the location or the identity of the individual," sheriff's officials wrote.

The skull is being submitted to the Clark County Coroner's Office for DNA analysis so forensic examiners can attempt to determine the individual's identity and cause and manner of death.

Officials say their investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information about the case is encouraged to contact the Nye County Sheriff's Office by calling 775-751-7000, Option 5.
