Police were involved in a standoff where shots were fired through the floor Monday night.

The standoff started around 8:30 p.m. near O'Bannon Drive and Decatur Boulevard, north of Sahara Avenue.

Police said some people in an upstairs apartment fired a gun through the floor into a downstairs apartment. The residents of the downstairs apartment called the police.

Reports say that four children, ages 1 to 17, were inside the downstairs apartment at the time.

Police arrived and took several people from the upstairs apartment into custody. Police then determined more people were involved, but they refused to come out. SWAT then responded to the scene.

SWAT teams worked for hours to get people barricaded inside the top apartment unit to come out.

"Somebody said they shot tear gas through [that window] to shake up the people upstairs so they'd stop shooting at the people downstairs, and maybe they'd run out of their apartment," says one neighbor, who only wanted to be identified as "Bill."

The standoff ended several hours later. Police say they have arrested five people total.
