RENO (AP) — Reno-area school trustees are reconsidering plans to reopen Washoe County schools Aug. 12, after the county health officer raised concerns that doing so could further spread the coronavirus.

The move comes after the regional health chief called distance learning the safest path forward. Unions also want distance-only education for the first nine weeks of the school year.

In Las Vegas, Clark County School District trustees cited virus concerns while deciding this week to keep classrooms closed and start with online education next month. The move affects some 300,000 students in the Las Vegas area.
