UPDATE: 5 dogs, 1 cat dead in East Charleston apartment fire

UPDATE at 6:45 PM: The fire department now says 5 dogs and 1 cat died in the fire. A family of 3 has been displaced.

Damage is estimated at $35,000. Cause of fire is undetermined but it could have been caused by careless smoking.

UPDATE AT 6:30 PM: The fire department says 2 dogs died in the fire. A 48-year-old male suffered minor burns to the back while attempting to save the dogs. Two other dogs survived.

ORIGINAL STORY

The fire department is on the scene of an apartment fire at 3839 E. Charleston Boulevard near Shiloah Drive.

According to a tweet by Las Vegas Fire & Rescue, heavy smoke and fire could be seen coming from the one-story apartment building upon arrival.

The tweet also says that one person is being treated.

 A few minutes later, a second tweet indicated that the fire was out and firefighters are now looking for hot spots. It also said that one person was transported to UMC with burns.
