LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — A first-of-its-kind test for Nevadans that will help you get healthy and give you insight into your family tree.

It’s the Healthy Nevada Projects, no cost genetic testing.

“It gave me a sense of peace and tranquility,” said Jaime Cruz, a participant.

Growing up, Cruz heard several stories about his family background. In order to get answers, he decided to take part in the genetic test.

Not only does the test take a deep dive into your family history, but it also tests for genetic markers to see if you are predisposed to certain conditions like cancer or heart disease.

“This was a way to kinda get an early warning for myself, my daughter, my kids,” said Cruz.

The process takes anywhere between 5 to 20 minutes, and all that’s required is a tiny amount of saliva. If you need help while you’re there, the spit station has posters of food along the wall to help you get your mouth watering.

“First and foremost, early detection saves lives,” said Kylie Rowe, spokesperson for the Healthy Nevada Project.

Rowe says, the test provides what could be life-changing results.

“When people are aware of a genetic health factor, they are able to prevent that," Rowe said. “This is really important because, not only do they get to learn about their background, but they also get to learn about diet and wellness.”

If a test does come back positive, patients will get key information from the test they can then take to their primary care doctor to get a jump start on prevention.

The goal for the project is to improve the health of Nevadans by generations to come.

Healthy Nevada Projects will be participating in the Live Well Health Fair on March 21 at Boulevard Mall.
