UPDATE: The father of the teen shot says the incident was a misunderstanding. He says his son is special needs and was defending himself against bullies.

The family says that school officials were aware of the bullying but did nothing to stop it.

The father has now hired a prominent attorney. The lawyer says the teen could lose a lung and suffer brain damage after the shooting.
