LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — Monday will have the first full moon of March, called the Worm Moon, and it happens to also be the first supermoon of the year.

According to the Farmer's Almanac, due to its supermoon status, this year’s Worm Moon has been named the Super Worm Moon.

“Supermoon” is the nickname for a full Moon that happens at the same time as perigee -- the point in the Moon’s orbit where it’s closest to Earth.

There are only three supermoons in 2020:

  • March 9
  • April 7
  • May 7

Please note, the moon will be full at 1:48 p.m. EST, meaning in Las Vegas it will be 10:48 a.m. The next moonrise in our timezone is 6:58 p.m.
