The City of Henderson’s leadership and efforts in reaching out to the public about Southern Nevada Strong (SNS) were honored with the American Planning Association’s (APA) 2016 National Planning Excellence Award for Public Outreach.

The award was presented on Thursday during APA’s National Planning Conference in Phoenix.

SNS, a consortium of 13 regional partners in Southern Nevada, was funded by a $3.5 million Sustainable Communities Planning Grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Transportation and was led by the City of Henderson on behalf of the entire region.

Over the three year grant life, SNS conducted in-depth research and analysis of current conditions to build a foundation for long-term economic success and community livelihood by integrating transportation, housing, and job opportunities.

Led by City of Henderson staff, the SNS initiative leveraged a variety of traditional and innovative outreach approaches in both English and Spanish to ensure broad community engagement.

More than 6,000 community members participated in outreach activities, with nearly 70,000 inputs received.

The end product of the process was a regional plan that highlights implementation strategies and priority projects to create the foundation for a strong and stable regional economy.
