The Casa Foundation hosted a back-to-school event Sunday for children in need.

Their goal was to help more than 500 local children in foster care.

Community members donated backpacks loaded with school supplies, along with a pair of new shoes, for the event held at Square Salon near Fort Apache Road and Charleston Boulevard.

Organizers say this gives the kids the boost they need heading into the school year.

"For these kids to have a day of just feeling like every other kid, excited and ready to go back to school," said Tera Anderson, a Casa Foundation member. "Not only are we equipping them with the supplies they need but they're also getting haircuts and manicures so they feel confident. Today is filled with fun. So it's what these kids have experienced. It's a really, really special day."

Kids were also treated to plenty of food, games and music.
