A marathon runner is nursing serious bites and scratches after a run in with an angry mother bear.
Karen Williams was on a trail in New Mexico, just a few miles from the finish line.
"She was ripping out my upper arms; I had my hands over the head and I screamed because that hurt. She didn't like me screaming, so she gave me a whack on the side of my head with her left paw", says Williams.
She says she must have surprised the bear and her three cubs.
Williams realized the only way to live was to play dead. Eventually, the bear did leave.
She was found by fellow runners and airlifted to a nearby hospital.
Since the bear attacked a person, it will have to be euthanized and tested for rabies.
Her cubs will be sent to a wildlife refuge.
