Prince treated for drug overdose before death

UPDATE: TMZis reporting that Prince was treated for a a drug overdose just 6 days before his death. According to the website, Prince was rushed to a hospital and doctors gave him a "save shot" which is typically administered to counteract the effects of an opiate.

TMZ sources say doctors advised Prince to stay in the hospital for 24 hours. His team demanded a private room, and when they were told that wasn't possible, Prince decided to leave. The singer was released 3 hours after arriving and flew home. His official cause of death has not yet been determined.

TMZ was the first to report on Thursday that the artist known as Prince has died at the age of 57.

Prince, whose real names is Prince Rogers Nelson, had a medical emergency last week that resulted in his plane making an unscheduled stop in Illinois.

However, he performed the next day and told the crowd that he simply had the flu.

Other news outlets were initially reluctant to say the singer was dead. However, shortly after the news began to spread, a publicist for the singer confirmed his death with the Associated Press.

The cause of death at this time is unknown. According to Carver County Sheriff Jim Olson, the singer was found unresponsive in an elevator.
