Gilbert Baker, who designed the Rainbow Flag, passed away inside his Harlem apartment on Thursday.

He was approached in 1978 by Harvey Milk to create something that would symbolize the LGBT community.

Milk paid $1,000 for Baker's work.

A Rainbow Flag will fly at half-staff from the San Francisco Mayor's balcony in memory of Baker.
