UPDATE NOV. 22: Nick Carter has issued the following statement in response to the accusations of assault and rape by Melissa Schuman:

"I am shocked and saddened by Ms. Schuman’s accusations. Melissa never expressed to me while we were together or at any time since that anything we did was not consensual. We went on to record a song and perform together, and I was always respectful and supportive of Melissa both personally and professionally. This is the first that I am hearing about these accusations, nearly two decades later. It is contrary to my nature and everything I hold dear to intentionally cause someone discomfort or harm.”

ORIGINAL STORY

Singer Nick Carter of the Backstreet Boys has been accused of sexual assault, according to various media outlets.

The accusation has been made by Melissa Schuman, a former member of the girl group Dream.

Schuman says that she and a friend were visiting Carter's apartment when they were filming "The Hollow" together in 2004.

Carter allegedly took Schuman, who was 18 at the time, into a bathroom and began kissing her. She claims that Nick took off her pants and ignored her when she asked him to stop. He then allegedly performed oral sex on her and demanded the same.

Schuman says that he then took her into a bedroom and proceeded to rape her even though she told him she was a virgin. She says that she did not say anything at the time because she feared that her career would be destroyed. However, she claims she has told the story to friends over the years.

Schuman made the accusations in her blog titled "Melissa Explains It All." At this time, Carter has not responded to the allegations.

Carter was 22 years old at the time of the assault.

The Backstreet Boys recently finished a string of performances at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas and are scheduled to return in Jan. 31, 2018, for several more shows.
