Her performance was a surprise to the event organizers, according to the New York Times. They only knew that she wanted to take on Mr. Trump.
Streep sang a duet with Christine Baranski, who impersonated Hillary Clinton. They performed "Brush Up Your Shakespeare," a number from the musical "Kiss Me, Kate." The song is typically performed by men and offers advice for picking up women. Streep and Baranski tweaked the lyrics, making the song about two presidential candidates trying to woo female voters.
