Lunch lady fired after giving child free meal

An Indiana woman who works for Irving Middle School has been fired because she gave food to a hungry student.

Dalene Bowden was a food service worker at the school in Pocatello, according to the Idaho State Journal.

She was placed on leave after she gave a free lunch to a 12-year-old girl who said she was hungry and did not have any money.

A few days later, she was terminated buy email.

Bowden says that she offered to pay for the lunch, which cost $1.70. But, her supervisor rejected the offer. She was accused of stealing.

The story has gone viral and a parent who has children in the school district started an online petition in hopes of convincing the school district to rehire Bowden.

Bowden says that she plans to seek legal advice.
