Doctors in India surgically removed 40 knives from the stomach of one man.

It took 5 hours of delicate work to get the knives out without killing the 42-year-old man.

"He had a wild urge to consume metal. Even for us, the experienced surgeons, it was frightening," Dr. Jatinder Malhotra told CNN.

The operation took place Friday in the northern Indian city of Amritsar.

Malhotra told CNN they found foldable knives, which when fully extended were around 7 inches long.

The patient, a father of two, told CNN he is feeling better.

"I'm sorry I let my family down. I'll be forever thankful to doctors and hospital staff for saving my life," he told CNN.
