EARLIER STORY

One woman is dead after a crash on Friday evening.

It happened near Charleston and Nellis Boulevards.

Police say a middle-aged woman got off a bus on the east side of Nellis and was crossing to the west side without using a crosswalk.

Investigators say a white SUV that may have been a Ford Explorer struck the woman as it drove southbound and fled the scene.

"This is a death out here on our holiday weekend," said Sgt. Richard Strader with the Metro Police Department. "Someone's going to be missing a family member and it's a shame that whoever was driving that car was such a coward that they couldn't stop and do their due diligence."

Several pieces of the vehicle were recovered that police hope to use to identify the car.

The coroner has not yet identified the victim.
