LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — The senior program administrator at Wetlands Park says the fire that burned 45 acres late Wednesday could provide an opportunity for officials to go in and plant.

"It's devastating for the habitat but it does give us an opportunity to improve the landscape," said Liz Bickmore, who says fires are part of the ecosystem.

"We have fuels out there that won't quite carry the fire."

This was the first fire at Wetlands Park this year, though there have been a number of fires at the park over the years.

The most recent fire was in August 2020. Before that, there was a fire in April of that same year. That one destroyed a pedestrian bridge.

In 2019 a fire at Wetlands Park burned about two acres and there was another fire in 2018 that burned about 40 acres.
