Northern Nevada health officials say they've confirmed Zika in a pregnant woman who traveled abroad.

The Washoe County Health District announced the case Friday, although they didn't say where the woman traveled. It's the fourth confirmed case of travel-associated Zika virus infection in Washoe County.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has documented birth defects in infants whose mothers have been infected. Those include brain damage, hearing loss and an abnormally small head.

Washoe County District Health Officer Kevin Dick expressed sympathy for the woman and her family, and said they were provided with the most current information about the consequences of contracting Zika during pregnancy.

Dick said the case underscored the risks of traveling to countries where the virus is especially active.
