A retired couple has been trying to get the city of Henderson to fix broken street lights for a few months now.
Jon Pequignot says the lights were vandalized about two years ago near his neighborhood. Pequignot says his neighborhood is mainly elderly people who like to walk their dogs in the area.
“The only lighting you will have over here is the parking lot lights, one of them, from the casino,” he said.
Pequignot says copper wire was stolen out of the lamps. He’s been trying to get the problem fixed for about five months but with no luck.
“We want to prevent crime in here and one of the ways you do that of course is to keep the area lit and try to prevent crime.”
Pequignot wants to be able to walk his dogs and feel safe but lately there’s been suspicious activity in the area.
“I’m afraid somebody is going to get hurt back here,” he said. “We have a lot of elderly people in our area back here and I worry about them.”
We reached out to the city of Henderson about the issue and they were appreciative Pequignot alerted them to it. A spokesperson with the city says they will have to outsource the work because of the amount of copper wire that needs to be replaced. The spokesperson says the task is moving up on their priority list.
