A trash can fire spread to a northwest Las Vegas home Friday.

Las Vegas firefighters responded to a reported house fire in the 7600 block of Adornment Court, near Buffalo Drive and Farm Road, at 2:12 p.m. Friday after several 911 calls.

On arrival firefighters found trash cans and the natural gas meter on fire on the side of the house. The flames then extended to the power meter and the side of the house. Firefighters quickly shut the natural gas off going to the meter and then extinguished the flames.  All of this took less than five minutes.

Fire investigators believe the trash cans sitting next to the gas meter caught fire. The fire then spread to the gas meter, melting a special safety plug which allows gas to escape preventing an explosion. The flames then spread to the power meter and telephone cables. The outside of the house was damaged, but the fire did not spread to the inside of the garage. Damage was estimated at $2000.

It is not known what caused the trash cans to catch fire.

Three adults and two children are displaced due to the utilities being disconnected to the house for repairs. The American Red Cross is assisting.

There were no reported injuries. The North Las Vegas Fire Department also assisted at the incident.
