Nevada school officials released a narrowed down list of failing public schools that could be converted into charter schools.
34 schools were previously eligible for the conversion. Now, the following nine schools are being considered:
- Craig Elementary
- Cambeiro Elementary
- Fitzgerald Elementary
- Kelly Elementary
- Brinley Middle
- Jerome Mack Middle
- Von Tobel Middle
- Orr Middle
- Bailey Middle
The Board of Education says they considered five factors while creating the list: proficiency, growth, equity, star ratings, and other miscellaneous indicators.
Many of the schools on the list are in the bottom fifth percentile of reading and math. And while the switch is intended to fix these problems, parents are concerned that programs like athletics and music will be cut to save money.
Out of the nine schools up for consideration, up to six will be converted into charter schools.
