Sparks parents say their son has opened his eyes for the first time in six days after the boy was hit by a car while riding his bike.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reports the family said 6-year-old Rhett Klinger began opening his eyes on Saturday and kept them open for longer periods of time.

His parents shared on social media that Rhett was also able to squeeze their hands when asked to and told them he knew who he was.

Rhett was taken to Renown Medical Center in Reno in critical condition after suffering a head injury with a small brain bleed and a fracture to his femur during the crash.

Sparks police say the driver, Joan Jiminez of California, has a medical condition that may have contributed to the collision.
