Sleeping safety tips for infants and babies

Posted
and last updated
In 2015, LVMPD officers responded to 17 incidents where an infant passed away while sleeping in an unsafe sleeping environment or a co-sleeping situation. So far in 2016, ten infants have passed away due to these conditions in Metro’s jurisdiction. This tragic situation can be prevented by observing the following recommendations:

-- Always place the baby on his or her back for sleep.

-- Dress the baby in light sleep clothing, such as a one-piece sleeper and do not use a blanket.

-- Make sure nothing is covering the baby’s head or face.

-- Babies should not sleep in an adult bed, on a couch or chair, or with anyone else.

-- Babies should sleep on a firm sleep surface, such as a crib mattress covered with a fitted sheet.

-- Keep soft objects, toys, and loose bedding out of the baby’s sleep area.
