LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — Roofing companies were getting slammed with calls on Tuesday as rain moved through the Las Vegas valley.

On an average day, Professional Roofing Services gets about 25 to 30 calls, but when it rains, you can add 100 to that number.

"We're going to see a lot of phone calls, a lot of emergency repairs," John Tighe with PRS said.

Emergency roof repairs can be costly, and during a storm, it's too dangerous to send a crew out on your roof so that you could be waiting a long time.

"Just try and contain the water as much as you can and keep everything as dry as possible on the inside is really about the only thing you can do during a heavy downpour," Tighe said.

So you don't get stuck in that situation, there is preventative maintenance you can do. The easiest, but most costly option, is hiring a roofing company to do a yearly inspection.

There are also these things homeowners can do when it comes to preventative maintenance:

  • Trim your trees - it's important not to have branches near your roof.
  • Remove any leaves or debris.
  • Pay attention to the color of your roof. Parts exposed to humidity for a long time will eventually become streaked with mold.
  • After a storm, check for any water stains inside your house, but at that point, you'll be playing catch-up.

"Generally if you see a stain or water on the inside it's too late. It's better actually to do inspections and get ahead of it, and it'll make a difference in the long run," Tighe said.
