The party seized victory in two fiercely contested southern Nevada state Senate contests, which puts them over the edge to a narrow 11-10 majority.

They also won in a landslide in the Assembly and could claim either 26 or 27 seats in the 42-member chamber. One northern Nevada race favors the Democrat by a razor-thin margin; it's still too close to call.

The productive, Republican-controlled Legislature of 2015 passed dozens of bipartisan education reforms and taxes to fund it.

But Democrats chafed at their lack of leverage to stop anti-union bills.
