EARLIER STORY

Las Vegas police are investigating a homicide in the 2200 block of South Fort Apache Road near West Sahara Avenue.

Police say that they received a call at 4:59 a.m. Upon arrival, they discovered a deceased male.

Police told the media that the resident of the apartment told police that the person who was killed had been banging on the door. The resident yelled at him to go away. However, the man kept banging on the door and attempting to open it. The resident opened fire through the door and hit the man.

At this time, it is not known if the resident will face any charges. The incident is still under investigation.

"I'm not going to criticize what happened here, but people do have a right to protect themselves in their residence," said Lt. Dan McGrath with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

The Clark County coroner will release the name and age of the deceased after relatives have been notified.

"I'm thinking wow what the heck is this? And then I turn the volume off on the t.v. and I'm waiting for the third one before I call building security and then it stopped," said Jonathan Smith, a man who lives in the complex who heard several gunshots.
