Police dog Nicky is back on duty after being stabbed with a machete last month while on patrol.

Nicky was off duty for nearly a month as he recovered from the injuries in the 12-hour standoff that began Feb. 11 near Desert Inn Road and Maryland Parkway. He returned to patrol Tuesday.

Shortly after the attack, Nicky underwent surgery for multiple stab wounds to his face.

His partner, Sgt. Eric Kerns, was hopeful Nicky would return to work within weeks.

"He's a very good police dog, he's a very courageous dog," Kerns said shortly after the incident. "He's been up against some tough suspects, some big intimidating people, and he doesn't care."

During Nicky's encounter with the suspect, Tolavius Timmons, he was cut multiple times with a machete while Timmons was bitten several times.
