North Las Vegas Fire Captain Yaphet Miller passed away peacefully on Wednesday with his wife Nickey at his side.

He was 43 years old.

The North Las Vegas Fire Department is considering Captain Miller a Line of Duty Death due to the fact that he was working a three-alarm fire on his final shift before his medical emergency.

According to a GoFundMe page created on Miller's behalf, Yaphet's heart suddenly stopped during the call, resulting in an anoxic brain injury.

The swelling in Yaphet's brain subsided after seven days and a clear picture of the injury emerged. There was no hope of recovery. The family honored his wishes and he was taken off all supportive care at noon on Oct. 3.

Yaphet was a dear friend to his brothers and sisters at the North Las Vegas Fire Department and to so many others in the fire service.

Funeral arrangements are pending at this time and will be released once finalized. Miller served others with the NLVFD for 22 years. He leaves behind a wife and two kids.

“Captain Miller was very intelligent,” said his colleague Captain Cedric Williams. “He was very funny. He was a positive motivator. And he made a difference. He was a big guy with a soft heart.”
