Now, her work is getting attention on a national level.

Tuesday will be an important day in state senator Yvanna Cancela. She will be one of 17 "Rising stars" keynote speakers at the democratic national convention.

It's a position that years ago, she could not have imagined.

"It was not something I even dreamed about to be an elected official, but when Trump became president, it was clear to me that the things that I spent my career fighting for, workers' rights, immigrants right, high-quality affordable healthcare, and I had an opportunity to put my name there to be appointed to the state senate."

Cancela says she would like to see more local Latinas in positions of power.

"The door that was open for me has to be torn up its hinges for the next generations, I want to see more Latinas in office, I want to see more Latinas in business, I want to see more Latinas graduating from our higher education institutions."
