LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — The Nevada Department of Transportation is activating the first stage of the Active Traffic Management, ATM, signs on Monday -- spanning portions of Interstate 15 and US-95 near the Las Vegas Strip.

The signs were installed every half mile on I-15 between Russell Road and Washington Avenue and on I-95 between Valley View and Las Vegas boulevards in 2019 as a part of the billion dollar Project Neon project.

The first stage brings variable speed limit and HOV lane signs online on the sides of the digital boards, and will eventually monitor traffic, provide video of the roadway, and alert drivers to open and closed lanes in the event of construction or a crash.

"The signs are still undergoing testing and integration," said NDOT spokesperson Tony Illia. "We anticipate to have the whole system activated and integrated by the end of March."

Illia says, when fully active, the nation's only "smart sign corridor" will give drivers plenty of notice when there is a traffic disruption creating a more efficient and safe roadway.

"Particularly curtailing the likelihood of secondary crashes," he said, "where people are doing look-ins or not paying attention or get flustered by the slow down in traffic and then bang, another crash happens."

NDOT says the full system will be online by the end of March.
