Mayor Carolyn Goodman focuses on safety, development and education in State of the City address

UPDATE: Mayor Goodman spoke for nearly 45 minutes. While the 1 October Shooting loomed large in the room, the mayor was clearly looking ahead to better days for Las Vegas.

Safety and security were big topics as well as the growth and development of the city's youngest citizens. 

Goodman announced the creation of a partnership with the Nevada Community Foundation to help shore up after school programs for inner city schools. MGM has donated $73,000. 

The city is also launching a summer program called Strong Future. It will help train young adults for better employment opportunities.

Mayor Goodman will provide her vision and insight for 2018 and beyond at the annual event. 

The city is hosting a live feed and Channel 13 will also be streaming her speech.

The city is encouraging residents to participate by using the hashtag #stateofvegas on social media.
