A man has pleaded not guilty to provoking an assault after hitting a woman with his truck during a protest in Reno.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reports that police say 18-year-old Nicholas Mahaffey rammed through a crowd of protesters gathered under the Reno Arch on Oct. 10.

Police say Mahaffey revved his engine several times as he tried to get through protesters blocking the street. The incident seriously injured 59-year-old Kitty Colbert, who had multiple fractures and is temporarily confined to a wheelchair.

The gathering was a protest organized by the American Indian Movement against Columbus Day and the Dakota Access Pipeline.

Mahaffey pleaded not guilty and was assigned a public defender Wednesday. His trial is scheduled for Dec. 3.
