Las Vegas sees spike in car thefts

There's a spike in stolen cars across the valley. How can you prevent yourself from becoming a target?

It's a bad idea to make your car a target for thieves by storing personal belongings inside.

But sometimes no matter what you do, you could be a target simply because of the year make and model.

A late 1990's Honda Accord is a popular model thieves are looking for.

This morning, we spoke to a Sergeant in northeast Las Vegas where they've seen an increase of about 24% from last year in auto thefts.

"We want to address that as soon as we start to see the issue," says Sgt. Fred Haas.

Another key piece of advice; don't leave your car running.

Whether it's too cold or too hot in the summer months, don't leave the keys inside. A lot of these crimes are crimes of opportunity.
