An elementary school in Henderson is taking steps to keep its students safe: parents will no longer be allowed on campus before or after school.

Parents of Vanderburg Elementary School received a letter Wednesday informing them they would no longer be allowed to join the kids before school for a flag salute.

"We are asking parents to say their goodbyes at the entrance gate," the letter reads.

After school, parents will have to wait outside the gate until their children are walked out by their teachers.

The changes are in response to the recent mass shooting in Parkland, Florida.

"We're happy that they're taking extra precautions and being as safe as they possibly can be," said Celia Erickson who has a first grader enrolled at the school.

The changes go into effect March 5. Parent volunteers are still welcomed on campus so long as they sign in at the front office.
